Bluetooth vs. BLE

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Bluetooth® Smart is a new Bluetooth 4.1 standard, allowing 4.1 compliant peripherals to connect with Bluetooth Smart Ready devices like smart phones. BLE is the intelligent, power-friendly version of Bluetooth wireless technology that works with an application on the smartphone or tablet you already own. The cost-effective BLE technology gives developers and OEMs the flexibility to create low power, battery powered peripherals that can communicate with the billions of Bluetooth-enabled smart phones already in the market today, and is supported by every major operating system. This new technology enables every day devices such as toothbrushes, heart-rate monitors, fitness devices and more to be connected, communicating through applications that run on Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphones, tablets or other similar devices already owned by consumers.

 

Why BLE?

According to recent studies, the IoT market is set for explosive growth with 69 percent of U.S. consumers planning to buy network-connected technology for their homes by 2019.* With billions of devices expected in the IoT and wearables markets, designers of all levels require a very low-power platform that allows them to develop smart, connected devices in space-constrained applications. Designed for Ease of Use

One of the primary challenges of the IoT market is system integration—connecting one or multiple devices to the gateway and cloud. The Atmel SmartConnect Bluetooth solutions solve these integration issues by enabling IoT designers of all levels the ability to connect their devices to the gateway and cloud with an easy-to-use, low-power Bluetooth connectivity solution is IoT ready with support for IPv6 connectivity stack that seamlessly interfaces with the embedded BLE4.1 stack. The portfolio of devices includes the BTLC1000, a Bluetooth Smart link controller integrated circuit that connects as a companion to any Atmel AVR® or Atmel® | SMART MCU through a UART or SPI API requiring minimal resource on the host side, in addition to the standalone Atmel | SMART SAM B11 Bluetooth Smart Flash MCU which leverages the embedded ARM® Cortex®-M0 core combined with the integrated analog and communication peripherals to implement application-specific functionalities and is available as a system-in-package or a certified module. All Atmel BLE devices are highly integrated SoC’s, requiring few external components and embedding the entire BLE 4.1 link and host stack enabling wireless connectivity for a variety of applications to be quickly implemented without the wireless expertise typically required.

 

Atmel SmartConnect BTLC1000

BTLC1000

The BTLC1000 is an ultra-low-power Bluetooth® SMART (BLE 4.1) system on a chip (SoC) with integrated microcontroller (MCU), transceiver, modem, MAC, PA, TR switch, and power management unit (PMU). It can be used as a Bluetooth Low Energy link controller or data pump with external host MCU. When combined with external memory, it can also function as a standalone applications processor with embedded BLE connectivity. The qualified Bluetooth Smart protocol stack is stored in dedicated ROM and includes L2CAP service layer protocol, Security Manager, attribute protocol (ATT), generic attribute profile (GATT) and the generic access profile (GAP). Additionally, application profiles such as Proximity, Thermometer, Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, and many others are supported and included in the protocol stack.

The BTLC1000 provides a cost-effective solution for many Bluetooth Smart based applications by integrating the Bluetooth Low Energy Radio and Baseband with an ARM® Cortex®-M0-based microcontroller. The need for very few external components minimizes the total system solution cost.

The BTLC1000 can be powered by a number of different battery types, ranging from coin cell, AA and AAA batteries to Lithium polymer batteries, without the need for external power management circuitry. The BTLC1000 uses an innovative radio and DSP architecture that delivers extremely low power consumption along with high performance.

The Atmel ǀ SMART SAMB11 is part of the Atmel SmartConnect family of wireless solutions. It is an ultra-low-power Bluetooth® SMART (BLE 4.1) system on a chip (SoC) with integrated microcontroller (MCU), transceiver, modem, MAC, PA, TR switch, and power management unit (PMU). It is a standalone applications processor with 256KB of Flash memory and with embedded BLE connectivity.
