Atmel Automotive Solutions for Under the Hood Applications

The toughest temperature requirements are for actuators located in the exhaust gas flow. One such actuator is the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. It is used to reduce pollution levels, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Turbochargers also need actuators in the exhaust gas flow. These are the VNT (variable nozzle turbine) actuator and the waste gate actuator, which diverts exhaust gas around the turbo to prevent over-pressurizing the intake tract. Purpose of the VNT actuator and Waste Gate are to adjust the Torque characteristic curve of the engine according to the crankshaft speed.
