Mobile Accessories

Welcome to the Atmel® mobile accessories platform application page.

A mobile accessory is a device that connects to a smartphone or a tablet via USB, UART or a wireless connection for control and data exchange. An application (app) running on the mobile device communicates with the mobile accessory.

Examples include:

  • E-bike controller: smartphones control the charge of the battery and display status information (charge, speed, time)
  • Digital microphone: input high-quality audio into a smartphone
  • TV tuner: bring TV programs to smartphones or tablets
  • Sports instruments, such as running shoe pods, cyclometers and heart rate monitors

For audio docking stations, Atmel has developed the Made For iPod (MFi) protocol stack that allows communication with an iPod®, iPhone® or iPad®. The same communication stack can be used for mobile accessories that connect to the mobile device via USB.
