Atmel and The Internet of Things

As the next frontier of the Internet, the IoT represents a compelling opportunity across a staggering array of applications. When taken as a whole, the IoT can potentially transform nearly every aspect of how we live, work, and play, on local and global levels.

Having a network of smart, connected devices means we can build safer buildings, design more fuel-efficient cars, lead healthier lifestyles. Self-regulating systems, with access to Big Data, mean more automated manufacturing, more intelligent supply chains, and better use of scarce resources.

By powering the IoT with integrated embedded solutions, Atmel provides the foundation for all these possibilities.

  • Wearables — From smart watches and fitness bands to industrial, healthcare and wellness products, Wearables comprise a new growth vector for the exploding Internet of Things (IoT) market. Wearable products require a broad range of technologies—from microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors to control the device, to sensor-fusion and sensor management, GUI and touch interfaces, BLE and Wi-Fi for wireless communication and security for authentication and anti-counterfeiting.
  • Apple HomeKit — This platform from Apple allows devices in the home to interact with Apple devices, also known as home automation or Smart Home. The certified Atmel HomeKit reference design allows developers to create products and applications to control lighting. Using the HomeKit, customers can now control all of their smart appliances in their home using one Apple device or Siri.
  • Secure Provisioning for Amazon Web Services — The AWS Zero Touch Secure Provisioning Platform offers the industry’s first end-to-end security solution for Internet of Things (IoT) devices that connect to the Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud. This platform was developed jointly with Amazon to help developers comply quickly and easily with AWS’s mutual authentication IoT security model, which state that devices must use mutual authentication with a remote server to be authorized on the AWS cloud.
  • Smart Plug — The Atmel® Smart Plug is a reference design targeting any secure Internet of Things (IoT) design. It contains all the core functionality required for a secure Internet-connected product. The design is available in three versions: One with cloud integration for the US and Europe markets using the Atmel Cloud by Proximetry solution, one for the Chinese market using the JD Smart Cloud solution, and one cloudless version, which allows control of the unit through a local Wi-FI network. Note that all hardware options supports all versions of the firmware. Three models are available: US, EU and Chinese standards.
  • Ultra Low Power Connectivity — Atmels Ultra Low-Power Connected Demonstrator (ATULPC-DEMO) uses Atmel’s SAM L21 MCU, interfaced with a fully certified BTLC1000 module and several sensors on a small form factor PCB (40mm X 30mm) operated on a coin cell battery. The environment sensor data (temperature, pressure, humidity, light), motion sensor data (3-axis acceleration, gyroscope) and sensor fusion data (3D plot, step count, free fall detection) are sent using BLE and displayed on an Android App. The HMI interface of the App is linked to a touch surface of the demo board, which is driven by the Peripheral Touch Controller integrated in the SAML21 MCU.
