Industry's first automotive touchscreen controller supporting shieldless sensors and gloved operation

The Atmel® maXTouch® family, known for its superior performance and rich feature set, is now qualified for automotive applications, such as automotive touchscreens and touchpads (supporting 2 inches up to 12 inches in diameter) used in center stack displays, navigation systems, radio human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and rear-seat entertainment systems.

maXTouch devices provide unlimited touch identification, fast response time, exacting precision, robust operation and low power consumption to touch-based designs.

The mXT134E and mXT224E automotive-qualified family members provide dedicated functionalities that meet specific automotive requirements such as high-temperature behavior and reliable operation in harsh environments.

The mXT768E and mXT540E automotive-qualified family members combine these functionalities with the ability to design single-layer shieldless sensors, thus reducing system complexity, cost and power consumption.

Embedded filters realized in hardware and firmware enable touchscreens supporting gloved finger operation―a key requirement in modern automotive HMI interfaces. Embedded single- and dual-gesture algorithms and the palm suppression functionality allow detection and suppression of unintended touches, such as a resting hand on the screen.

Key Features

  • mXT540E and mXT768E: fully automotive-qualified (Grade 2), operating within the temperature range of -40 degrees Celsius up to +105 degrees Celsius
  • mXT143E and mXT224E: fully automotive-qualified (Grade 3), operating within the temperature range of -40 degrees Celsius up to +85 degree Celsius
  • High signal-to-noise ratio (80:1), enabling gloved-hand operation
  • Support for single- and dual-touch gestures (pinch, stretch, etc.); unintended touches such as a resting hand on the screen are classified and rejected
  • Up to 280Hz scan speed, which supports character recognition for alphanumeric inputs to the automotive HMIs
  • Lower cost, lower power consumption and higher product yield
