Embedded Security - Overview
Based on security certified hardware platforms with Common Criteria EAL4+/EAL5+ and/or FIPS 140-2 security certificates, Atmel offers three Embedded Security solutions for an easy integration in any system:
- Turnkey Security Modules: for a very fast time-to-market with no security related software development
- Communicating Secure Microcontrollers with various industry standard interfaces for customer firmware development
- Secure System on Chip for demanding applications requiring a complete bunch of interfaces

Turnkey Security Modules Atmel has developed a family of hardware security modules to prevent high-tech goods counterfeiting, multimedia contents copying and identity theft. Based on Atmel smartcard design expertise and leadership, the AT98SC family is a complete and easy-to-use solution offering low-cost, ease of integration. It embeds a cryptographic application allowing strong challenge-response authentication, One Time Password (OTP) generation, digital signature (RSA PKCS#1 V2.1, DSA, ECDSA), data encryption (AES, 3DES, RSA PKCS#1 V2.1), message digest (SHA1, SHA256), public key generation (RSA 4096, DSA, ECC) and random number generation. It also includes an administration application to manage contents and configuration of the chip. Data are permanently stored in a file system (EEPROM located) which is fully customizable according to customer application requirements. Folders can be password protected and file access rights can be defined to protect user sensitive data and restrict access to cryptographic features.

Communicating Secure Microcontrollers Atmel offers two families of communicating secure microcontrollers based on two different dedicated architectures:
- 8-/16-bit secureAVR® for compact devices with low power consumption and fast computation
- ARM 32-bit SecurCore™ SC100 for very demanding applications
Both architectures offer fast and robust cryptography engines (DES, TDES, AES, RSA, ECC…), security features, together with a choice of memory profiles, various interfaces (SPI, USB, I²C, MMC, ISO7816…) and different packages for an easy integration on Printed Circuit Boards.

Secure System-On-Chip Atmel has developed a new generation of secure microcontrollers for trusted electronic devices (transaction terminals, EFT/POS, PINPads, health card readers, home banking, access control, transportation). Based on the ARM SecurCore™ SC100, the AT91SO family achieves an outstanding level of integration with many interfaces (smartcard reader, USB, SPI, UART, GPIOs, EBI, etc). It offers an impressive set of cryptographic features including hardware DES, TDES, AES and SHA-n, a cryptographic accelerator for asymmetric algorithms (RSA, Elliptic Curves, key generation) and a true random number generator. The AT91SO101/100/51/50/25 are compliant with EMV and PCI PED standards. The AT91SO100 is the first secure microcontroller platform for trusted electronic transaction terminals that has been awarded a Common Criteria EAL4+ certification. The Atmel devices with this certification are ideal for applications such as e-payment, access control, e-government and e-identity. In addition, with the capacity to completely protect a physical perimeter, any product of this family can be used for anti-cloning or software protection solutions.
