Atmel LED Driver Technology
Atmel® LED drivers are based on system-centric, mixed-signal LED driver technology for backlighting and solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. This broad-based and rapidly growing market includes LCD TVs, PC monitors, specialty panels (industrial, military, medical, avionics, etc.) and general illumination for the commercial, residential, industrial and government market segments. LED drivers utilize a proprietary and patented combination of analog and digital circuit techniques and power control schemes.
These products comprise a system-centric solution for local and global dimming, power management, signal conditioning and smart interfacing. This approach allows electronic equipment manufacturers to significantly enhance product features, while improving power efficiency, reliability and cost/performance.

The Atmel® family of LED drivers offers the highest integration, reducing the overall system cost and size for LED backlit monitors. Our compact, high-power 16-parallel string LED drivers feature internal current control MOSFETs that sink up to 30mA per LED string with better than 3% accuracy. They can drive up to 10 white LEDs per string, for up to 160 LEDs per device. A single pulse-width modulation (PWM) input controls the PWM period and duty cycle for all strings. These devices also offer automatic fault management of string open-circuit, short-circuit and over-temperature conditions. Faults are alerted on the FLTB pin, and fault status is optionally available through the I2C/SMBus compatible serial interface.

Multi-string Solution
Atmel offers compact, high-power LED drivers for multi-LED string applications such as direct backlight/edge-lit LCD panels and high-brightness solid-state lighting applications.
Atmel LED driver solutions comprise of three product families:
The Integrated Boost Controller and Internal Current Sinks LED driver family provides an internal boost controller and an internal current control MOSFET to sink up to 30mA per string. These devices can drive up to six strings with up to 12 white LEDs per string, for a total of 72 LEDs per device—scalable up to four devices. These solutions address the notebook, industrial and medical LCD panel markets, where design simplicity, small BOM and internal digital compensation are critical.
The external DC-DC Control and Internal Current Sinks LED driver family delivers power, controllability and programmability—all in one compact solution. These devices adaptively control the external DC-DC/AC-DC converters that power the LED strings using Atmel Efficiency Optimizer technology, which minimizes power use while maintaining LED current accuracy. These high-power LED string drivers use internal current control MOSFETs to sink up to 100mA per string, and can drive 16 parallel strings of 10 white LEDs each, for a total of 160 white LEDs per device. Each string can be individually controlled to enable area (zone) dimming for highest dynamic range and significantly reduced power usage. These devices address the direct backlight LCD panels and monitor applications.
The LED Drivers Solutions with External DC-DC and NFETs drivers family also offers the Efficiency Optimizer technology, but uses external current control MOSFETs to sink up to 2A per string. The devices can drive 4-16 parallel strings of LEDs and offer fault detection and management of open circuit and short circuit LEDs. They also support LED string voltages up to 250V. These devices address the edge-lit and high-brightness solid state-lighting applications, which require higher power while enabling PWM and analog dimming.
