Notebook Backlight

Atmel offers LED driver solutions with feature sets that are specifically designed to reduce component count, provide design flexibility and enable lowest overall system solution cost for notebooks with LED backlit LCD displays. These devices offer a digital control loop and require no external components to manage the LED supply and regulate LED current up to 30mA per LED string, up to 12 LEDs per string. LED dimming is achieved through an external PWM signal or an internal 8-bit PWM engine. Analog dimming of LED string current is available for use with an ambient light sensor (ALS) and/or temperature management with a thermistor or IC temperature sensor.

An I2C/SMBus compatible serial interface is available, and operates at up to 1MHz, giving access to internal 8-bit PWM dimming and 4-bit analog current adjustment for 12-bit current control. The individual string and fault reporting are also available via the I2C/SMBus. The MSL1061 driver operates with one of four I2C slave addresses selected from a single input pin (AD0). This allows for scalability up to four devices on one bus to address large LCD panels, whereas the lower-cost MSL1064 device offers one fixed I2C slave address for small panels.
