Television Direct Backlight

The Atmel® family of LED drivers offers the highest integration, reducing the overall system cost and size for flat-panel televisions. These devices support both edge-lit and direct backlight LCD configurations. Patented Atmel Adaptive Power Scaling technology also delivers significant power savings. All drivers incorporate an internal pulse-width modulation (PWM) engine with video sync capability that eliminates motion blur and offers the industry’s widest dimming range (up to 12 bits), precision string control and string-to-string-matching. Comprehensive monitoring adjusts for LED aging, faults and thermal effects.

Atmel LED drivers adaptively control the DC-DC/AC-DC converters that power the LED strings using the Atmel Efficiency Optimizer technology, which minimizes power use while maintaining LED current accuracy. These LED string drivers use internal current control MOSFETs to sink up to 100mA per string, and have the ability to drive 16 parallel strings of 10 white LEDs each, for a total of 160 white LEDs per device. Sixteen interconnected devices can control up to 2,560 white LEDs. Each string can be controlled individually to enable area (zone) dimming for highest dynamic range and to significantly reduce power usage. These devices address the direct backlight LCD panel and monitor applications.
