You now have a choice between a 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M0+ based and an 8-bit AVR core microcontroller to go with a best-in-class 2.4 GHz RF transceiver for all your Internet of Things (IoT) designs. The SAM R21 series, like its predecessors: the ATmegaxxxRFR2 and ATmegaxxxRFA1, are IEEE 802.15.4-compliant single-chip wireless solution that goes beyond all the benefits and features that you have become accustomed to, offering such as:

  • Enables you to easily scale your design with a wide range of memory densities offerings – 64K to 256K of Flash memory
  • Allows your battery operated devices to last longer by just consuming 70µA/MHz in active mode; consumes up to 50% less current compared to the next best offerings in the market
  • Allows greater design flexibility in interface mix and PCB routing with a richer set of peripherals, such as the inclusion of the serial communication modules (SERCOM) configurable as UART/USART, SPI or I2C
  • Addresses higher performance applications by operating up to 48MHz and offering a RF link budget of 105dBm

All of these improved benefits are built on top of a solid foundation established by the 8-bit AVR wireless microcontrollers that you’ve come to love over the years, with features such as:

  • The advanced hardware-assisted reduced power consumption (RPC) capability
  • A variety of power-down modes, such as a wake-on-radio feature, which keeps the RF transceiver active while the microcontroller sleeps, further enhances efficiency.
  • Antenna diversity feature enhances reliability by automatically selecting the best signal from two antennas for each incoming frame

Last but not least, system development is still extremely easy with the support of free Atmel software stacks, Wireless Composer, libraries and hardware evaluation and development kits.
